However, Tamil Nadu has always been a forerunner in ophthalmology. The state hosts many premier eye institutes which train aspiring ophthalmologists in advanced skills and technology, who then go on to serve patients in different parts of the country. This is much needed due to huge prevalence of eye disorders in India such as cataract, glaucoma, retina and cornea diseases, etc. The country leads the world in terms of number of people who are visually impaired. There are 12 million blind people and 450 million people requiring vision correction. Conferences like the IIRSI play a very important role in enhancing the skills of Indian eye surgeons to address this huge challenge.”
Said Prof. Amar Agarwal, Secretary General, IIRSI, and Chairman, Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital: “The annual conference of IIRSI has become a pivotal event in the ophthalmology calendar of India centred around global ophthalmic innovations. This year, 20 top eye surgeons from countries like from US, Turkey, Brazil, Germany, Egypt and Switzerland are participating to showcase to the Indian surgeons the latest advancements in the field. The event has several innovations to benefit the participants. We hope this largest annual assembly of ophthalmologists in India will go a long way in helping enhancing the advanced eye care skills of Indian eye surgeons and bridging the technology gap with their Western peers. Overall, IIRSI has been instrumental in significantly increasing the capabilities and offerings of the eyecare sector in India in terms of diagnostics and treatment.”
Said Dr. C Vijayabaskar, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Tamil Nadu: “I am glad that Chennai is hosting such a prestigious event of ophthalmologists from India and the world, and I am delighted to see thousands of experts participating. Such a national platform would enable Indian eye surgeons to have an edge in treating patients with latest technology for eye disorders like cataract, glaucoma and refractive errors. The eyecare infrastructure existing in Tamil Nadu is world-class and offers quality treatment at an affordable cost. I hope that the state emerges as among the top destinations in the world for medical tourism for patients suffering from complex eye disorders.”
