GURU NANAK COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS) MATRIBHASHA DIWAS – 21.02.2020
As per UGC’s instructions sent to colleges, the International Mother Tongue
Day, “MATRIBHASHA DIWAS” was grandly celebrated at Shaheed Baba
Deep Singh Auditorium, Guru Nanak College in association with International
Women’s Federation on 21st February 2020. The Founder, Ms. A. Sasikala
welcomed the gathering of more than 1200 students and staff. The General
Secretary & Correspondent, Mr. Manjit Singh Nayar presided over the function.
The former justice of Chennai High Court Shri.T. N. Vallinayagam glorified the
Mother Tongue and Vijay TV Big Boss fame,Poet, Lyricist, Actor and Writer,
Snegan, vehemently spoke on the value of one’s mother tongue. Dr. R.
Ravanan, The Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Chennai Region
highlighted the importance of one’s mother tongue. He also insisted that
learning one more language is like having one more asset. He recalled UN’s
declaration of The International Mother Tongue Day on 21st February 2000.
Since then, which has been observed all over the world signifying the role of
Mother Tongue. The President of Tamilnadu Chamber of Commerce Mr. Chola.
Nachiyar Rajesekaran traced the history of the International Mother Tongue
Day which happened on 21st February 1952 culminating in the students’ led
protest. The Principal of RMK Residential School, Mrs. Uma Narasima Murthy
emphasized on the need to promote one’s Mother Tongue in this diversified and
globalised world. She quoted that 43% of world’s languages will be endangered
in the next five years. So, this remarkable day has to be observed every year to
protect our Mother Tongue. The Principal Dr. M.G. Ragunathan, proposed the
vote of thanks. The Guinness Record Holder Ln. Dr. Senthil Krishnan anchored.
